History: A handy link.
Nymphadora Tonks' personal history remains canon until June of 1996. One evening, several days after the Battle int he Department of Mysteries, Tonks had left 12 Grimmauld Place. Tonks made it halfway through the neighboring park before falling through a Rift.
She found herself transported through space and time. Tonks wound up in the middle of Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois. It was the 29th of January and the year was 2011. Tonks was what the local population called a Wanderer. Many had fallen through Rifts. Tonks might have wandered on for quite a while had Harry Potter not found her. He brought her to the Kashtta Tower where quite a few Wanderers made their home. She would live there for next two and a half years.
Tonks had adventures of her own. She fought off Dementors. There were monsters. She started her own detective agency and magic service. She made friends. Though she had and she tried to live her life absent her family. Having friends from her own world helped with the adapting.
She even met someone. Tonks met Allen Francis Doyle on Valentines Day. He dropped to a knee and serenaded her on the spot. It wasn't of his own volition but it prompted drinks just the same. They dated for a while. Tonks liked Doyle. She liked him a bit but just as soon as he entered her life, he was gone. Two months later, she discovered he was pregnant.
Her pregnancy was not easy. She found herself plagued, like several others in Chicago, by an entity known as the Slender Man. The worst of it was she didn't understand it. Protective spells did not work. Sleeping potions lost their ability to work on her. For months she kept it to herself, not wanting to put her friends in danger. When the visions and hallucinations were over, her pregnancy had nearly ran its course. Tonks never found out what exactly had been stalking her. However, she would retain and immediate distrust and fear of tall men in black suits.
Maia Rose Tonks was born in July of 2012. It should be noted that Gilderoy Lockhart was present at the birth. (Yeah.)
Two months passed and another Doyle fell through a Rift into Chicago. Tonks had every intention of not telling this one about Maia. Her intentions didn't matter. In her attempt to not reveal the information, she inadvertently did so.
Their relationship started slowly at first. This Doyle wanted to be a part of Maia's life, alternate or not. Time passed and things moved on.
Life in Chicago was decent. She had her detective agency, her daughter and Doyle. Life could have gone on being decent for quite a while had the entire world not swallowed itself whole. The Rifts that brought people to and fro, the Rifts that lead to fantastic other worlds and sometimes let other worlds in, were going haywire. It was only a matter of time before the world was snuffed out.
Before this could happen, Doyle proposed to her and Tonks agreed. They were married in a very small courthouse ceremony. Doyle and Tonks gathered their belongings. Everything was going to pot and they took a chance escaping through a Rift.
They wound up in a world much like Chicago. It wasn't the best sort of world, a darkness tinged everything. Certainly, it wasn't a world ideal for bringing up a child in. She tried. Tonks got a job putting on a magic show at a seedy little bar.
When Eli's offer came in, Tonks decided to take it. It could be a new beginning to something better. Doyle had other ideas. He would come later. The Powers that Be, the source of his visions needed him to do something. Specifics were not given to Tonks but she was clear. If he did not come within six months, she was going to come back and kick his arse.
Personality: Canon.
Overall, she is a good person. She fights on the side of angels. It is her duty to help and to do what is right. She will lend her assistance (despite perhaps the other person not wanting it) if she can. She has a lot of good features such as being trustworthy, loyal, friendly, dependable, honest, funny, hard-working, and she’s brave. Tonks never would have been asked to join the Order if she incapable of doing the right thing. She never would have been given the task of being part of the Advanced Guard and guarding Harry if she couldn’t be trusted nor would she have volunteered if she wasn’t brave.
She’s smarter than she lets on (most of the time). In order to qualify for entrance exams, an applicant must have at least five NEWTs in hard subjects. Aside from getting high marks on exams, in order to qualify for Auror training, an applicant must pass a series of aptitude and personality tests. Tonks never would have made it if she was going to crack under pressure. According to her father, her cleverness has allowed her to escape tough spots before.
Tonks is a friendly person with the admitted inability to behave. She laughs easily. She tells jokes. She even uses her morphing powers for dinnertime entertainment. She is far less serious than her older counterparts in the Order of the Phoenix which allows her to get along well with Ginny Weasley and Hermione Granger. Tonks event informed Ginny on how to check to see if a door had an Inperturbable Charm put on it, a sign that she doesn't follow the rules as seriously as some.
She does display some of the trademark qualities of a Hufflepuff. She is loyal to the Order of the Phoenix. She is a hard-worker as demonstrated by her career path. Tonks is a compassionate woman who has never cared about blood purity, being status, or if someone happens to be a werewolf. She doesn't like to leave the work to others. She's a helper but often does not realize that other people may just prefer for her to sit and relax such as when she offered to help Molly in the kitchen.
She is painfully honest and without much tact, such as when she talks to Mad-Eye and asks him who does he know that lost a buttock and if he cares that washing his eye is disgusting. Tonks doesn’t feel the need to sugar coat things so she just tells it like it is. This trait could be either very good or annoying. It’s not as though she intentionally wants to be inappropriate, it’s just that she doesn’t think about it. For example, after Bill Weasley was injured and Fleur declared that she still wanted to marry him, Tonks made her intentions toward Remus perfectly well known. It wasn’t the time or the place, she said it just the same however.
Tonks is a klutz. If it were possible, she is clumsy enough that she could trip on her own shadow and impale herself with her own wand. With Tonks, tripping over her own shadow just might be possible. At 12 Grimmauld Place, she is forever tripping over an umbrella stand. She’s also very good at knocking over plates. She doesn't have a lot of shame about her clumsiness. Sometimes she jokes about it.
It should be noted that her powers are tied into her emotions. Normally, she has no problems with her morphing abilities. However, when she is depressed and under a tremendous amount of stress, she loses her ability to change her appearance.
Tonks also loathes her given name Nymphadora. She is quick to correct that she prefers to be known by her surname only. There are only two people she will not correct, her mother and Albus Dumbledore. However, she doesn’t mind being called Dora.
Admittedly, Tonks has never gotten the hang of 'householdy' spells. She knows how to pack. She knows some simple cleaning charms such as Scourgify. However, she never mastered them while her mother could get socks to fold themselves. She finds anything that's too clean, too well-kept just a bit unatural.
She’s a bit over-eager, some would even say that she’s brash and annoying. While she doesn’t rush stupidly into danger on a normal basis, it is possible for her emotions to overrule her common sense. As stated previously, Tonks is very blunt. Tonks doesn’t mean to cause harm (most of the time) but sometimes there is a two-second delay between her mouth and her brain. She speaks without really thinking about it.
Beyond the Rift Changes.
The above is still true but there have been some changes. There were some months where she had to do what she had to do in order for them to survive. Tonks caused a few ATMs to malfunction and spit money out in order to provide a roof over her family's head. She finds that she has even fewer bothers left to give.
Tonks is more familiar with the Muggle world and it's technology. She knows how to use a computer's basic functions. She has done some mundane detective work. Some of her phrases have become a bit Americanized. 'Whatever' has entered her vocabulary. She is more up and aware of pop culture, technology and movies.
With the birth her daughter, she's become a bit more mature. She had a rough pregnancy is very protective.
As far as physical changes go, every Wanderer to fall through a Rift was given a special ability. It was called a Rift Change. Tonks' ability is to become intangible. However, it has only manifested three times. All three times were during a moment of great stress. It remains uncontrollable.
Why do you think your character would work in this setting? The world Doyle, Tonks and Maia ended up was tinged with darkness. Tonks thought it would be a better beginning for her daughter Maia, anything had to be better. Also, the town could use a bit more magic and a bit more aggravation via klutzes.
